The Challenges of Flying with a 400 Pound Wheelchair

My blog this week was supposed to tell you guys about the amazing art teachers I've had throughout my career, but the experiences I had with my wheelchair over the weekend flying to Maine and back inspired me to switch it up a bit. Don't worry, art teachers are soon to come. A couple of months ago, Mom and I were given a unique opportunity to plan a trip to anywhere in the United States we'd like to visit at little cost to us. We chose to head to Maine, a trip we've wanted to take for several years, to visit a some close f[...]

The French Quarter: A Love/Hate Relationship

One of the first questions I get when people find out I'm from New Orleans is "Don't you just love to hang out in the French Quarter? Do you do that every weekend?" "It's eating chicken wings all by itself!" (Exclaimed by an old lady to an entire food court in a mall.) "What a cute baby!" (Dude, I'm pretty sure I could teach you curse words you never knew existed. Can your[...]

Witnessing a Miracle on America’s Got Talent

About four years ago, I received an email offer from Lakefront Arena for free tickets to a taping of America's Got Talent while it was auditioning in New Orleans. The taping was on a Tuesday afternoon, so I thought it would be a nice change of pace during the work week for my assistant and I to attend. I applied for the tickets and got a couple for the noon show. When we got to the arena, I was impressed that we got decent parking and were let in first because of my wheelchair. While in line with the other wheelchair us[...]
